Dear Friend,

As president and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, I am privileged to oversee many efforts that are integral to our future as a leading health care institution. While each is a unique opportunity, one new initiative is especially meaningful and personally gratifying: the establishment of a new Harvard Medical School (HMS) endowed professorship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in honor of Mark E. Josephson, M.D., chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and director of the Harvard-Thorndike Arrhythmia Institute.

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Josephson has been credited with transforming the field of cardiac electrophysiology from an intriguing scientific idea to a robust diagnostic and therapeutic tool for the management of arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms). His research into the physiologic basis of these conditions has led to revolutionary achievements in their diagnosis and treatment. A highly regarded educator and prolific author, Dr. Josephson is considered the "father of electrophysiology."

I invite you to join us in our efforts to honor Dr. Josephson and his legacy in perpetuity by helping to establish this endowed professorship. Your generous support for this $3.3 million fundraising campaign will allow us to recognize Dr. Josephson's extraordinary contributions and to build upon his very special brand of care, research, and education of the next generation of cardiovascular leaders.

I offer my personal and heartfelt thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,
